DBSCAN clustering of 4,065 metro gyms surfaces the apex walkable anchor. Niantic's announcement of 1,000-trainer Mega Mewtwo gyms defines the apex moment. This page is the doctrine: where to stand, what to bring, when to push.
DBSCAN at eps=200m, min_samples=3 identifies a single density-connected cluster spanning Millennium Park east into Lakeshore East. 8 gyms in a 378 m diameter footprint, 7.3 minute walk from Palmer House Hilton. North of Monroe Drive — outside the restricted park zone, accessible every day of the trip.

The highest-priority 30 minutes of the trip. Niantic spawns new 1,000-trainer-capacity gyms during the final 30 minutes of each park session. Both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y appear. Catches come with the Pokémon GO Fest 2026 location background and the first Mega Level pre-unlocked.
| Form | ATK | DEF | STA | Max CP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Mewtwo X (Fighting/Psychic) | 339 | 215 | 228 | 6,910 |
| Mega Mewtwo Y (Psychic) | 413 | 223 | 228 | 7,267 |
Mega Y is the highest-CP Mega in the game at reveal. Source: GamingHQ datamine; community-verified, not Niantic-published. Energy pools are SEPARATE — X and Y do not share Mega Energy. First Mega-Evolution: 7,500 each = 15,000 total to first-evolve both forms. Plan accordingly.
If you complete ≥2 of the four City District Timed Research challenges on Thursday (your first citywide day), you earn a guaranteed Mega Mewtwo X or Y encounter with Mega Level 1 unlocked. Same catch quality as the Super Mega Raid; you choose one form. This is your safety net if the Saturday in-park raid fails. Completing just ≥2 districts unlocks BOTH this Mega Mewtwo encounter AND the Pokémon GO Expert medal — all four is optional (each district also awards its own medal).
District names (community-reported — Niantic hasn't officially published them): Investigations (Lincoln Park / NEWCITY) · Friendship (Field Museum / Rate Field) · Collection (entire Loop community area — Palmer House is INSIDE Collection) · Scouting (NW including O'Hare / West Loop). Your itinerary covers all four — Collection is automatic from Palmer House. Thu: Palmer House (Collection) + LPZ (Investigations). Sun: Wrigley (Investigations). Mon: Field Museum (Friendship) + O'Hare (Scouting). The Expert medal needs only 2 districts, so it's essentially free — Day 1 alone clears that easily.
PokeMiners pushed UI buttons indicating the Mega Mewtwo Timed Research may branch into separate X and Y paths — meaning you might have to pick one. If true, the choice locks: pick whichever form you missed (or got the worse IV of) in the Saturday SMR. Strategy: bank your in-park catches first, then choose the missing/weaker form for the research insurance. If you got both X and Y at high IVs in the park, pick the one matching the Mega you'll level most (probably X — better stats, Fighting type adds raid utility).
Doctrine: Ghost-led, not Dark-led. Mega Mewtwo X is Fighting/Psychic; Fighting resists Dark (0.625×), so Dark damage on X is neutral (1.6 × 0.625 = 1.0). Ghost is super-effective on all three Mewtwo forms (X, Y, regular) AND gets the +30% mega boost from Mega Gengar's Ghost/Poison typing. Dark is kept as backup for Y / regular Mewtwo only, where it works but requires a different mega (Tyranitar/Houndoom) for the boost.
| Mewtwo moveset / form | Best counter | Top picks |
|---|---|---|
| Psystrike (in-park guaranteed) / regular | Ghost (Dark also viable) | Mega Gengar (SC + SB), Chandelure (Hex + SB), Shadow Banette (SC + SB) |
| Shadow Ball | Ghost | Same as Psystrike |
| Focus Blast / Ice Beam | Ghost / Fire | Mega Gengar (Lick + SB), Hisuian Typhlosion (Hex + SB) |
| Mega Mewtwo X (Fighting/Psychic) | Ghost ONLY | Mega Gengar (SC + SB), Chandelure (Hex + SB), Shadow/Mega Banette · Dark = neutral on X |
| Mega Mewtwo Y (pure Psychic) | Ghost (preferred) or Dark | Mega Gengar + Ghost squad · OR Mega Tyranitar + Shadow Ttar/Hydreigon if going Dark |
The doctrine above is tuned for the Saturday in-park Mega Mewtwo X/Y Unity Raid, where clear speed + Mega Energy win → Mega Gengar. For the citywide regular-Mewtwo raids Thu/Fri/Sun, switch your active Mega to Mega Malamar (Dark/Psychic). Regular Mewtwo is pure Psychic, so Dark is super-effective — Malamar's in-raid Dark boost is battle-useful — and its Psychic half triggers the active-Mega type-match catch bonus, stacking extra Mewtwo Candy + Candy XL on every catch. No other strong Mega does both: Gengar is Ghost/Poison, Tyranitar is Dark/Rock, Houndoom is Dark/Fire — none share Psychic with Mewtwo. Malamar's own Attack is low (208), so keep it evolved for the boost + candy and bring 6 strong Dark hitters (Shadow Tyranitar, Hydreigon, Shadow Weavile); in filled citywide lobbies the boss dies regardless. Mega Malamar debuted at GO Tour: Kalos – Global (Feb 28 – Mar 1, 2026); it's one of the few Megas that can reach Mega Level 4 ("Super Max").
Ghost-led primary build. The Feb 2026 Mega update boost is +30% to attacks matching the active Mega's type, +10% to all others (flat — it does NOT scale with Mega Level), so Mega Gengar's Ghost/Poison typing gives every Ghost attacker on the bench +30%. Dawn Wings Necrozma (Psychic/Ghost) is the standout non-Mega attacker — it resists Psystrike (0.625×) and stays full SE on all three forms. Chandelure and Banette take Psystrike at neutral — whereas Mega Gengar takes it super-effectively (1.6×, via its Poison side), so it's the glass cannon: top DPS, but keep it healed.
| Slot | Pokémon | Moveset |
|---|---|---|
| Mega | Mega Gengar (Ghost/Poison) | Shadow Claw + Shadow Ball OR Lick + Shadow Ball |
| 1 | Dawn Wings Necrozma (Psychic/Ghost) | Shadow Claw + Moongeist Beam (best non-Mega Ghost · ATK 277 · resists Psystrike 0.625×) |
| 2 | Chandelure | Hex + Shadow Ball (Ghost/Fire — neutral to Psystrike) |
| 3 | Shadow Banette OR Mega Banette | Shadow Claw + Shadow Ball (pure Ghost — neutral to Psystrike) |
| 4 | Shadow Tyranitar (Dark backup — Y / regular only) | Bite + Crunch (Frustration cleared) |
| 5 | Hydreigon (Dark backup — Y / regular only) | Bite + Brutal Swing |
| 6 | Shadow Weavile (also doubles for Primal raids) | Snarl + Avalanche |
Two ways to fill a 5★ Mewtwo lobby as a solo player.
